Strata Solar proposes to build solar farm in Chatham County – Business – NewsObserver.com

Strata Solar, the state’s biggest solar farm developer, has proposed building a 20-megawatt solar farm in Chatham County that would be as large as any in the state.

Chapel Hill-based Strata filed an application this week with the N.C. Utilities Commission to build the solar farm on a 160-acre site slightly east of the intersection of Charlie Brooks Road and Moncure Pittsboro Road in Moncure.

Strata plans to sell the electricity generated by the farm to the N.C. Electric Membership Corp., one of the nation’s largest rural electric cooperative organizations with nearly 1 million electricity customers statewide.

The solar farm would be larger than any currently in North Carolina. However, Apple has proposed building a 20-megawatt solar farm near Charlotte.

Strata Solar, with 40 employees, operates 11 megawatts of solar farms in the state. The 3-year-old company plans 15 industrial-scale solar farms for completion this year. Strata Solar has designed or proposed more sunshine-to-electricity projects than any of the state’s estimated 75 solar developers and installers.
